Bridge Across The Sky: Resources

For learning more about the immigration station and its history:

  • The best book is Island: Poetry and History of Chinese Immigrants on Angel Island, 1910–1940, Second edition, edited by Him Mark Lai, Genny Lim, and Judy Yung (University of Washington Press, November 2014). This landmark work contains translations of all the wall poems (by San Francisco poet Genny Lim) as well as oral histories by those who passed through the station.
  • The best website is aiisf.org, the official website of the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation.

For learning and playing the game of Go, which plays a big role in the novel:

  • Way to Go is by far the best tutorial I know of.
  • There are many online Go servers where you can play against others for free. I play on OGS, under the username deyala.

School visits

If you’re a school that would like me to come talk to your students either about the history behind the book (for a general student audience) or the writing of the book (for students in writing programs or classes), you can find more information here.
